The Green Chapel
Ludchurch has many legends attached to it, it has been claimed that Robin Hood and also Bonnie Prince Charlie used it as a hideout, not at the same time I hasten to add!
According to a 14th century tale it is claimed that Ludchurch was the Green Chapel. The story goes that Sir Gawain, one of King Arthur’s knights of the round table was challenged to a fight by a Knight all dressed in green including his horse. The Green knight invited Sir Gawain to take a swing at him with his sword, this resulted in the Green knight losing his head, which he then promptly picked up off the floor, he then issued a request for Sir Gawain to meet him in a year and a day at the Green Chapel, which according to legend and the fact that the description fits in with many features of Ludchurch points to the possibility of this location being the Green Chapel.
The face of the Green Knight can be seen at the top of this photo.
