The Largest Sub Post Office in the U.K?

The small village of Wildboarclough consists of a small scattering of houses which is located in the county of Cheshire in the U.K. This small village has a couple of notable things which sets it apart from other places, in 1989 it was virtually wiped off the map when a 30 ft wave traveled down the valley and almost destroyed the village, it took out houses as well as bridges and a memorial plaque can still be seen on one of the bridges which records this terrifying event. It was caused by a violent storm high up on the moors, a blocked culvert created a huge body of water which eventually released and came down the valley taking everything with it.

The other claim to fame which Wildboarclough has is that it used to have the largest sub post office in the country, it was originally built as offices for the nearby Crag Works in the early 19th century, it later served as the postmaster’s house and the village hall on the upper storey. The three storey porch was likely added in the mid 19th century. The old post office stands as a testament to the area’s history and community life. While it may no longer function as a post office, its architectural character and heritage continue to captivate visitors and locals alike.

If you ever find yourself in Wildboarclough take a moment to appreciate the charm of this historic building and imagine the bustling activity that once took place within its walls.
