The legend associated with the area is that of the Gardner’s Stone, which is said to be an ancient marker in the woods that was used by the Gardner family to divide their land from that of their neighbours. The stone is also linked to that of a ‘wise man’ who allegedly lived in the area and told fortunes using the stone as a guide.

Meanwhile Spirit Hole Woods is another woodland located in this area which has a fascinating set of myths and legends attached to it, which have provided locals with stories to share for generations. One of the most well know myths is that of the Wizard of Wem, a powerful magician who lived in the woods. As the legend goes, he could transform himself into any animal he desired and could turn anyone who crossed him into a toad.

Another legend involves the idea of the Spirit Hole itself, a mysterious hole in the ground (now filled with water) that has been linked to various supernatural events over the years. Some say that it is a gateway to the underworld, while others believe that it is a place of power where Spirits and Fairies gather. The legend of the Spirit Hole has been passed down through generations, adding to the mystique of the area.
