An Abandoned Tank.

High up on the Staffordshire Moorlands in the U.K can be found an unusual sight. What I initially took to be the remains of a World War Two Sherman tank may actually be what is left of a Grant tank.

The location of the tank is on Morridge Moor, situated in the picturesque Staffordshire countryside, it is home to a military firing range operated by the Ministry of Defense (MOD). This rugged and remote area serves as a training ground for armed forces personnel, where they hone their skills in various tactical scenarios. The location of the tank is bounded by the A53 Leek to Buxton main road to the west, ‘Dry Stones’ to the east, South Swainsmoor to the south, and North Swainsmoor to the north.

The firing range is used for military training, including live fire exercises, pyrotechnics, and blank ammunition drills. The area is fully enclosed with fencing, and prominent signs warn against entry due to the potential presence of unexploded ordnance. Within the training zone, there exists a designated “closed impact area”. This restricted section ensures safety during live fire exercises and is strictly off limits to unauthorized personnel.

Do not enter the danger areas when the ranges are in use. This is a matter of life and safety. If you encounter any unexploded ordnance or have enquiries contact the following numbers promptly. Training Safety Officer 01785 763134 Operations Room 01874 635599 Helpdesk 0800 0223334.

Morridge Moor stands as a vital training ground, where our servicemen and woman prepare for their critical roles in defense. Its rugged beauty conceals the intense training that takes place, ensuring our armed forces remain ready and capable.
