Land Of The Giants?

Did a race of giants exist around the Coombes Valley and the nearby village of Ipstones in the county of Staffordshire?

The following information was taken from the book “The Tale of Ipstones” looking into the origin of the Ipstones name and also the giant human remains discovered in this area.

“It would seem the origin of the Ipstones name is lost in the mists and fogs of a distant past, we can only guess or trace the meaning from the various spellings of the word. Epiakon, a town of the Brigantes, a British tribe occupying the district before the Romans, may survive in the present name. Yppa, or Eoppa was an Anglo Saxon personal name but it is difficult to connect this Anglo Saxon name with the stones hereabouts, unless it may have been the stones which formed the burial chamber. We are informed by Dr Plott that digging in a barrow close by, there were found men’s bones of an extraordinary size, which were preserved for some time by a Mr Hamilton, Vicar of Alstonfield. However the report is vague and throws no light on the numerous traditions that in these parts lived sometime a race of giants!
