Offset Church Clock

This photograph shows the clock which is situated in the tower of St Edwards church in the town of Leek in Staffordshire. According to legend Oliver Cromwell fired a cannon from Gun Hill which is fairly close to the town of Leek and according to the story the cannonball struck the tower of the church creating a large hole in it. To camouflage the hole a clock was added and that is said to be the reason why the clock is in an offset position.

I do know that Oliver Cromwell was in the area at one time because Biddulph Old Hall came under bombardment by a large canon in his possession which was named the “Roaring Meg”, so perhaps there is an element of truth to this tale after all!
